Guides

A tool gives you a number. A guide explains what the number means, where it comes from, and the parts of the calculation that no interface can show you.

Every page in this section is a long-form companion to one of the calculators on this site. The calculators are deliberately narrow: they take a handful of inputs, apply a formula, and return a result. That is what makes them fast and trustworthy — but it also means the interesting part, thewhy, has nowhere to live. A mortgage calculator will tell you what a monthly payment is; it will not tell you why a quarter-point of interest rate matters so much more in year twenty-eight than in year two. A fee calculator will show the drag; it will not show you the arithmetic that turns one percent into a quarter of your lifetime return.

That is the gap these guides fill. They are written to be read rather than operated, and they are built around worked examples rather than advice. Where a number appears, it came from a script or from a published source, not from a guess — the tables in each guide can be recomputed from the same figures the calculator uses, so the prose and the tool can never quietly disagree.

If you are here to use a tool, start with the calculator itself; the guide is linked from it. If you are here because you want to understand a decision before you act on it, read the guide first — it will tell you which inputs actually move the answer and which ones barely matter, so the number you eventually get means something.

A note on sourcing and limits. Each guide lists the official material it relies on, and those links are checked rather than assumed. Every guide carries a visible review date, and topics that touch money, law, or health are labelled and given an explicit disclaimer: they are educational explanations of how a calculation works, not advice for your specific situation. Nothing here is generated, and nothing here uses a ranking, a testimonial, or a fear-driven headline to get you to click something.
